ARUN GHOSH – PRIMAL ODYSSEY

Arun Ghosh is a British-Asian clarinettist, composer and music educator. Conceived in Calcutta, bred in Bolton, matured in Manchester and now living in London, Arun Ghosh’s musical vocabulary and vision reflects his rich geographical heritage.

‘Primal Odyssey’ represents the continual exploration of Indo-Jazz from an iconoclastic approach to the possibilities of clarinet-led sounds. Ghosh released his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Northern Namaste’ in 2008 again on Camoci Records, which I remember showing much support to back then.

With ‘Primal Odyssey’ Ghosh continues to compose in an Indo-Jazz framework with melodies originating from ancient raags, rhythms from taals, coupled with jazz instrumentation and idioms, recreating traditional tabla patterns using double bass and drums, developing new rhythmic cycles and expanding the raaga repertoire through jazz improvisation and harmonies.

Hence the music on ‘Primal Odyssey’ has both a strong Indian compositional aesthetic – modelled on Bismillah Khan’s classic ensemble of three shehnai players and percussion and a jazz sensibility akin to Ornette Coleman’s ‘chordless’ quartet.

Simply stunning !!!
